A message from Aprile Pilon:
Why am I doing this study? The purpose of this survey is to find out if parents of premature infants would be interested in having an e-stethescope type of product and service. Your responses will help us to decide if there is a market for this type of product and service or not.
Why were you asked to participate?  You were invited to participate because your baby was born preterm, which means they were born early (less than 36 weeks 6 days gestation).
Will my participation be anonymous? Yes, all your answers and information will be kept confidential.
What is being studied?  Empower Telehealth is developing a new sensor, similar to an electronic stethoscope, a cell phone app, and a data storage service to help monitor your child’s lung or heart condition at an affordable cost. We believe that parents of infants and children with lung or heart problems could benefit from having this sensor product and data storage service.
What are the benefits of participating in this survey?  Imagine if you could take a small handheld sensor, place it on your child’s chest and collect breath sounds on your cell phone, then send the sound file to your doctor’s office or a telemedicine company. The doctor or nurse would be able to listen to your child’s chest sounds without being in the same room. You could get a consult over the phone to help you decide if you should keep your child at home, take your child to the doctor, or change his/her medication without ever leaving your home. Your child’s respiratory sound data could be stored and files compared over time to help manage his/her respiratory care and keep track of his/her condition.
Are there any risks to participating in this survey? The questions in the survey are primarily about the use of a potential product that would monitor your baby’s breath sounds and whether or not this would be useful to you as a parent/caregiver of a medically fragile infant. You can skip any question you would rather not answer.  Thinking about your baby’s health in relation to this product may bring up emotions about what may have been traumatic experiences. This may lead to what is called secondary trauma. You can ask for help to cope with these feelings. You can leave the study at any time.
How long will it take? Your participation in this survey should take approximately 5 minutes.
Will I be paid to participate? No. You will not be paid for being in this study.
You do not have to be in this study if you do not want to. If you choose to participate in this study, you have rights. These include:
